Why Get Your Skis Waxed?
Waxing your skis is important even if you don’t want your skis to be really fast. Waxing helps to protect the bases and keep your skis in good shape for many years. It won’t protect them from rocks and dirt, but it will keep them from drying out and deteriorating. If you’ve ever experienced snow clumping up on your bases, it will help prevent that as well.
How often should they be waxed?
That depends how much you ski. Racers who want to keep their skis in prime condition will, at a minimum, wax them after every 50 km skied. That is not necessary for the recreational skier. Most can get by with waxing once or twice per season. Wax is pretty durable in powdery snow, even well groomed, hard packed powder. Icy conditions tear the wax out of your bases pretty fast. As a general rule, I would recommend waxing them once early in the season, and once mid season, but if you see your bases getting white coloring on them, that definitely means they need wax.
The best bet for recreational skiers who don’t want to invest in the irons and scrapers necessary for hot waxing is to purchase some liquid rub on waxes. There are tons of them out there now. The universal F4 rub ons are tried and true waxes for preventing the clumping in sticky wet snow. They now have lots of liquid rub ons for different temperature conditions if you want better glide on a daily basis. These should not be considered a replacement for traditional hot waxing as they do not have the durability. Hot waxing is still a necessary component if you want to take care of your skis properly.
